Past Courses Disappearing from Canvas
If you notice courses from previous years are no longer in your Canvas dashboard, don't worry!
Your past courses are likely not gone, but removed from your Canvas Dashboard because of newly set Terms Dates in Canvas.
On January 17, 2023 all terms more than a year in the past (Spring 2021 and earlier) will automatically have an end date in Canvas assigned. As future terms are created, they will also have end dates about a year after their terms officially begin. This change means little to instructor and student access to these courses, and mainly will affect how the courses are displayed in Canvas and whether students can submit to activities in past courses. Some Georgetown schools and departments have always included end dates in their Canvas courses, and this change will put all courses on the same footing, similar to the way Blackboard used to work and the way Canvas functions at almost all higher education institutions.
Here is when to expect each term to end:
- All Spring terms will end on February 1st of the next year
- All Summer terms will end on July 1st of the next year
- All Fall terms will end on October 1st of the next year
You will always be able to find courses from past terms on your Canvas courses page. Scroll down to the end for the "Past Enrollments" section. Currently employed instructors should always have access to their past courses. Students by default will have access, but some schools, programs, and professors restrict student access to their courses after the semester is over.
