JAMF macOS Upgrades
JAMF is now configured to identify which Apple computers are compatible with certain version of macOS upgrades and allow the user to download the installer for this version of macOS to their applications folder.
Now that we’ve unblocked macOS Catalina and Big Sur (Monterey coming soon) the user should be able to download and run the installer on their own.
Coming soon: If the computer is compatible with macOS Monterey the following policy will be available in Self Service under the macOS Upgrades category:
If the computer is compatible with macOS BigSur the following policy will be available in Self Service under the macOS Upgrades category:
If the computer is compatible with macOS Catalina the following policy will be available in Self Service under the macOS Upgrades category:
For the installers to appear in Self Service a few conditions need to be met.
-
JAMF Client: The JAMF client must be working properly on the device, you can verify this in JAMF by searching for the device serial number and checking last check-in and last inventory date
-
Fix:
- Confirm this is a GU asset
- Troubleshoot this using the following KB: https://help.georgetown.edu/a/solutions/articles/16000046727
- Once the client is working properly you may have to run the policy in Self Service "Update Computer information in JAMF" for the installer to appear
-
Compatibility: This process works by identifying the computer model and presenting the latest macOS version compatible with the device. The installer will only appear on devices compatible with said installer. You can verify the device model in JAMF by performing a search for the device serial number or computer name and selecting hardware tab

-
Fix:
- If the computer model is not on any of these lists it must be decomissioned and/or replaced
-
Free Disk Space: The computer must have 45 GB of free space available, this is the space required for the installer to download and decompress itself
- Fix: Assist user with clearing up space on the device
- Once the client is working properly you may have to run the policy in Self Service "Update Computer information in JAMF" for the installer to appear
If the device doesn't meet all three of these requirements, the installer will not appear in Self Service or macOS Upgrades category. We’ll be sending out alerts on these devices per this KB article:
