Instructions and Troubleshooting for Campus Phone Service
I. Dialing Instructions for Campus Phones
A. On-campus Calls
1. Dial only the last five digits of your full phone number to call another campus phone number.
2. Example: To call the Student Help Desk at... Dial... 202-687-4577 7-4577
B. Off-campus Calls (Local and Long-Distance)
1. Dial 9 to access an outside line, then dial the full number you want to call.
2. Dial the area code for local calls to Maryland or Virginia.
3. Example:
a. To Make This Call: Type... Dial...
b. Local DC Calls 202 area code 9 + phone number
c. Local MD/VA calls 240/301/571/703 area codes 9 + area code + phone number
d. Long Distance (US Domestic) and Toll-Free (800/888/877) Calls 9 + 1 + area code + phone number
e. Long Distance (International) Calls 9 + 011 + country code + city code + phone number
4. Restricted phones: After dialing the number, you will be prompted to enter your long distance account pin.
C. Speed Dial
1. Popular off-campus phone numbers are included in a student speed dial list.
2. Dial *8 and the 3-digit speed dial code from any residence hall phone.
II. Conference Calling
A. Setting up a Conference Call on Your Desktop Phone
1. To add a third party to a call:
a. Press R or press the switch hook.
b. Dial the number of the third party and wait for an answer.
c. Once answered, press R or press the switch hook to begin conference.
d. If you get no answer or the line is busy, press the R button or press the switch hook to return to the original party.
2. To add a third party to a call on multi-line sets:
a. Press the Conference button.
b. Dial the desired party.
c. Once the party has answered, press the Conference button again.
d. Repeat steps 1-3 for additional conference connections.
3. Multi-line set users can conference up to six calls at one time.
III. Troubleshooting
A. Student Phone Service
1. How do students request voice service?
a. Contact the Service Center to request a phone line installation for your room.
b. Provide your name, NetID, building, floor, and room number.
c. Installations can take three to five business days.
2. I don't receive incoming calls.
a. Check for dial tone.
b. Check to ensure your telephone is plugged into the wall telephone jack.
c. Make sure your ringer is turned on.
3. Calls go straight to voicemail.
a. Check to make sure the handset is sitting properly in the cradle.
b. Clear forwarding on your phone: Dial #2, hang up, then dial #3 and hang up.
c. Call the phone line to confirm call forwarding is removed.
